There are strong rumors on Twitter that Lahore Qalandars are about to take the captaincy from Sohail Akhtar and give it to Shaheen Afridi.

I wonder what are everybody’s thoughts on this?

Personally, not a fan of this decision. Yes, I’m happy for him and I suppose it will help him grow in stature and possibly learn more about things like setting the field..but I’m concerned about the pressure..the stress..the answers that he will be required to give on the back of inevitable Qalandar meltdowns in hostile press conferences. This is a generational talent. Just want to wrap him in cotton wool.

I suppose PSL for him is meant to be a comparatively pressure free time..just hoping if this does happen..it doesn’t have any ill-effects on his own bowling.

Would he utilize himself differently as a captain? He can be leader of the pack without being captain. They have Fakhar..Hafeez..could’ve made somebody else the captain. Khair.

Thoughts?

I'm always advocating for fast bowlers to be captains, frustating when we see batsman constantly preferred, though I can understand why to a point.

If Shaheen was being given captaincy for Pakistan, I would have opposed that just as I did Babar due to being old school when it comes to ensuring your star player is not burdened more than required. But in this case, Shaheen being given captaincy for a month in one year at LQ is only going to benefit Pakistan.

He will be forced to pick up his performance, improve his performance as he is one to lead from the front, learn more about younger players coming through the system, speak to coaches/players/intl's with a sense to learn amongst other such qualities. Most importantly he is going to be put in pressure situations where he will only have to excel more.

Bear in mind, Babar and Rizwan are established as captain/VC, add Shadab, Shaheen and possibly more core players into the mix with strong captaincy experience - that's a serious core of players with real pressure experiences behind them.

Will only strengthen the core of Pakistan.

Exactly my sentiment. PSL for these guys is about honing skills, strengthening our core. This World Cup we had guys like Babar, Rizwan, Malik, Hafeez and Shadab making the calls as the experienced/captains but soon with PSL experience we will have Babar, Rizwan, Shadab, Hasan and Insha’Allah Shaheen.

His bowling will also improve n terms of field sets and manipulating it, just a lot more exposure
Wish more fast bowlers were captains think it’s a very attacking option

Also for LQ anyone is better than Akhtar.

Too early for him, he needs to play more. He is still immature, hitting the BD player after got hit shows that, and he almost did that again in Test.

Yeah wholeheartedly agree.

This way our fast bowlers will also be more independent, what I'm referring to is;

1) Field placement, not having to consult every tom, **** and harry. Forced to be creative.
2) Cohesion. Whereas a bowler generally only thinks about his spell, Shaheen will be forced to consider other bowlers and their spells, making for a cohesive unit.
3) Plan B, C, D etc. As a bowler you can become one dimensional, as Shaheen has done in the past, now that the lead role is on him, he'll have to ensure he plans for all situations and come up with multiple solutions.

Of course this is all dependent upon Shahwen himself, the learning is huge but he needs to ensure he takes this oppourtunity himself.

Would really love to see Hasan as captain more though eventually.

Fast bowlers as captains are unique. I wouldn’t mind trying it, surely it is not going to have much of an impact on his bowling considering it is T20? Also it just seems practical to get him some leadership experience.

This is a solid point and I hope this happens but having a hard time thinking of the last successful fast bowler captain in the last 10 years? Cummins is now test captain for Aus - Jason Holder for a short while?

They could've gone Fakhar but interesting to see them go for the pacer as a captain

Apparently it’s a sort of majboori - they are expecting categories to change and will struggle at retention..just heard something like that from Saqib bhai - Relukatay

Hasan did a fantastic job as captain of Central Punjab in FC - Shaheen just looks like a slightly aloof character for captaincy..i suppose appearances can be decieving and you need to have responsibilities thrust onto you before judgement..

Think there is a general reluctancy to appoint fast bowlers due to how injury prone they are and let's be honest, more quicks have broken down than any other player type in cricket.

Cummins will be interesting, I want to see him do well so that this perception changes and everyone is considered.

Holder didn't do too badly, let's be honest, guy was dealt an extremely bad hand.

Fair enough. Cummins could be the real trail blazer in this regard.

It is also beneficial as passengers like Sohail Akhtar can be removed from the squad, but knowing LQ somebody mediocre be drafted as a replacement.

Both were/are equal issues

Would argue captaincy bigger issue. If he wasn’t captain they could’ve benched him
